Deadline of submission: 23 June 2023
WHO is inviting expressions of interest for organizations to join the Global Alliance for Drowning Prevention, to be established as an informal network to coordinate, strengthen and expand efforts to prevent drowning.
The Alliance envisions a variety of relevant stakeholder organizations involved in drowning prevention contributing knowledge, skills, expertise and resources to unified, multisectoral drowning prevention efforts.
The goal of the Alliance is to bolster global efforts to accelerate country-level action towards a world free from the burden of drowning.
Organizations interested in joining the Alliance should agree and act upon principles that will govern the Alliance. These include:
- To encourage alignment and coordination across United Nations entities, international development partners and nongovernmental organizations on drowning prevention;
- To be agile and responsive to emerging priorities associated with drowning prevention and safety around water;
- To drive country-level action by maintaining a focus on impact and results;
- To be transparent in all processes, including the operational strategy and Alliance activities;
- To ensure all activities supported by the Alliance and all messaging provided though the Alliance is evidence-based and aligns with WHO’s norms and standards;
- To facilitate coordination among interested parties to advance WHO’s priorities on drowning prevention.
Beyond agreement to agree and act upon the principles of the Alliance, membership in the Alliance is open to a limited number of organizations – both State actors (including UN agencies and organizations) and non-State actors – that meet a number of criteria. Amongst these criteria are:
- Organization actively and internationally working in the field of drowning prevention;
- Organization has proven experience and expertise in the subject matter for at least 10 years;
- Organization can demonstrate a strong history of collaboration with WHO;
- Organization can demonstrate having worked with and/or represented diverse stakeholder groups, across diverse geographical regions and income settings.
How to get involved
Expressions of interest received by the deadline of 23 June will be reviewed by WHO and the Alliance established accordingly.
