Background
More people die each year from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) than from any other cause. Over three-quarters of heart disease and stroke-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Acute coronary syndrome is a significant contributor to this mortality as we as morbidity.
The WHO currently does not have any guidance on the management of stroke and thus the NCD department is embarking on a process to develop guidelines on the management of stroke as a technical product.
Objectives
- To develop a scoping document to determine the content matter of the guidelines on management of stroke
- To develop a planning proposal for submission to the WHO guideline review committee on management of stroke
Deliverables
Under guidance of the medical officer CVDs:
- To undertake a comprehensive review of existing guidelines (from major societies, national institutions, WHO) for the period 2015-2020 in order to determine:
- topic of focus
- management options including immediate medical management, interventional cardiology and surgical interventions
- To prepare a summary of the different guidelines indicating the following:
- methodology or evidence undertaken/ used to develop the guidelines
- consistency or the lack thereof for cut off values to diagnose hypertension
- threshold for starting pharmacological treatment in people with high blood pressure
- To prepare a scoping document including:
- the summary above
- proposed PICO questions
- list of potential panel members in coordination with WHO focal points
- To attend the first GDG meeting as a panel member
- To prepare a planning proposal for submission to the WHO guideline review committee (GRC)

Essential qualifications
Medical degree with specialist degree in neurology.
Desirable qualifications
Degree in epidemiology.
Essential experience
At least 10 years’ experience as a clinical neurologist managing patients with stroke. Experience in conducting systematic reviews and related research
Desirable experience
Experience in guideline development
Familiarity with GRADE
Skills / Technical skills and knowledge
Scientific and technical writing
Knowledge of public health approach
Communication skills
Language requirements
English- Expert level
Place of assignment
All work under this contract will be home-based and carried out at the service provider’s usual place of residence.
Travel
No travel is expected.
Duration and Remuneration (exclusive of per diem, travel costs or other expenses)
The service provider will be remunerated at a rate that is commensurate with his/her experience based on the UN common salary scale.
