What are the core competencies in adolescent health and development for primary care providers?

The core competencies outlined in the guide are critical skills, knowledge, and attitudes that primary care providers need to effectively address the unique health and development challenges of adolescents. These competencies are categorized into three domains: Basic concepts in adolescent health and development, Laws, policies, and quality standards, and Clinical care of adolescents with specific conditions. Your input can help ensure the competencies listed under each domain remain relevant and actionable, and identify new competencies if needed.

Why was the guidance developed?

The guide was developed to address the global need for a competent healthcare workforce that can provide quality care to adolescents. It aims to help countries develop and implement competency-based educational programs in adolescent health and development. By fostering the capacity of health-care providers, the guide supports the implementation of the Global Standards for Quality Health-Care Services for Adolescents.

Why do we need to update it?

Since the guide's release, new health challenges have emerged, such as global pandemics and climate change, that the workforce should be equipped to deal with. Our understanding of adolescent health and well-being has evolved integrating domains of well-being such as education and skills, agency and resilience, connectedness, and safe and supportive environments. WHO has published the Universal Health Coverage Global Competency and Outcomes Framework that guides efforts to enhance workforce capacity towards UHC. The update will ensure that the core competencies reflect the latest evidence, address current health and well-being concerns and training gaps, incorporate new educational methodologies, and aligns with the UHC Global Competency and Outcomes Framework to facilitate system-wide implementation. It will help to ensure that institutions in charge of professional education and training of the adolescent health workforce benefit from cutting-edge advice.
