The World Health Organization (WHO) invites all stakeholders to provide comments by Wednesday, 20 May2026 on the draft Target Regimen Profiles (TRPs) for long-acting injectable (LAI) regimens for tuberculosis (TB) preventive treatment (TPT) and TB disease treatment (available here), by using this feedback form.
The TRPs for LAIs are intended for pharmaceutical developers, researchers, product development partnerships, national TB programmes, civil society organizations, and donors involved in the development and implementation of new TB regimens. The document specifies minimal and optimal requirements across key characteristics for LAI-based regimens for TB preventive treatment and treatment of TB disease. The overall objective of these WHO TRPs for LAIs for TB treatment and TPT is to align developers’ performance and operational targets for new regimens with the needs of end-users, in line with the current trends in science.
LAIs represent a potentially transformative technology for TB prevention and treatment. By reducing the frequency of drug administration, LAIs can facilitate medication adherence, reduce pill burden, lower stigma associated with TB care, and simplify programmatic delivery. Building on demonstrated success in HIV—including cabotegravir and lenacapavir—LAIs for TB are now entering early clinical development for both TPT and treatment of TB disease. These TRPs have been developed to ensure that emerging LAI regimens are designed to meet the needs of people affected by TB, national programmes, and global public health goals.
This draft of the TRPs has been developed through a consultative process involving a Scientific TRP Development Group composed of leading scientists, clinicians, public health experts, regulators, national TB programme representatives, and civil society. Development included a landscape analysis of existing LAI technologies for TB and other diseases, stakeholder surveys and focus group discussions conducted across multiple regions and consideration of mathematical modelling studies on the potential impact of LAI regimens. The final version of the TRPs is expected to be published later this year, after incorporation of feedback from this public comment period, further expert review and a consensus meeting.
