Background
The COP26 Special Report, The Health Argument for Climate Action, aims to raise the health voice, health arguments and health urgency of tackling the climate crisis. It reflects the growing evidence and availability of solutions to maximize the health benefits of tackling climate change, while also offering a clear set of asks and proposed solutions from the global health community to climate change policy makers at COP26.
This year is crucial for international climate action, with far-reaching consequences for the long-term health and resilience of communities and societies. WHO and the global health community are calling on governments to commit to more ambitious climate action, to place health and social justice central, and to commit to a healthy recovery from COVID-19. The COP26 Special Report hopes to place health and equity front and center at COP26.
This report builds on the COP24 Special report on Health and Climate Change, which was developed at the request of the President of the 23rd Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP23), Prime Minister Bainimarama of Fiji.
Purpose of the public consultation
The recommendations outlined in the COP26 Special Report hope to represent the unified voice of the global health community at the COP26 UN climate conference in Glasgow and beyond. The recommendations would thereby provide a clear set of demands in this crucial year for action on both climate change and health, expressed by one of the most trusted communities in the world.
The report aims to ensure representation from across sectors, regions and population groups, and particular care has been taken to ensure the voices of the most vulnerable communities are included.
