The eighth meeting of the WHO Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (WHO TobReg) discussed eight papers in response to requests of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) at its 6th session in October 2014. This was a closed meeting for WHO TobReg members, key facilitators of the Articles 9 and 10 Working Group of the COP to the WHO FCTC, the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC, other invited experts, and the WHO Tobacco Free Initiative.
The papers discussed in this meeting, included:
- Specific cigarette characteristics and design features.
- Toxic chemicals found in the liquid and aerosol of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
- Toxic contents and emissions of smokeless tobacco (SLT) products and waterpipes.
- Whether the standard operating procedures for nicotine, TSNA, and BaP in cigarette contents and emissions are applicable or adaptable to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), SLT products, and waterpipes.
- Menthol in tobacco products.
The eighth meeting is part of the process of crafting documents that will be presented at the 7th session of the COP in November 2016. In addition, the resulting WHO TobReg advisory opinions will be compiled into TobReg's 6th technical report series.
This meeting was generously hosted by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). ANVISA is a member of the WHO Tobacco Laboratory Network (TobLabNet) and represents Brazil as one of the key facilitators in the Articles 9 and 10 Working Group of the Conference of the Parties to the WHO FCTC.
