On 9 September 2020, WHO will be launching the second progress report on Global trans fat elimination 2020 at a virtual high-level event in collaboration with Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies.
Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year, nearly half of all deaths due to noncommunicable diseases. Many of these deaths are in people under 70 years of age, and most occur in low- and middle-income countries. Diet-related risk factors, including consuming foods containing industrially produced trans fats, are a major driver of preventable deaths due to cardiovascular disease. However, eliminating trans fats from the food supply is feasible and cost effective. It can improve health and well-being of people to achieve healthier populations and save lives.
In May 2018, WHO called for the global elimination of industrially produced trans fat by 2023 and released the REPLACE action framework to serve as a roadmap for countries to implement the prompt, complete and sustained elimination of industrially produced TFA from the food supply. In May 2019, WHO released the first progress report together with six REPLACE modules with practical, step-by-step implementation guidance to support governments.
This year, WHO is publishing the second progress report, highlighting the current global, regional and national situations and progress over the past year in countries; and discusses challenges and opportunities for future action.
