On the 21 June 2022, the World Health Organization held the 6th session of the COVID-19 Case Management Webinar Series: Care of the critical patient.
COVID-19 can progress to critical illness, including hypoxemic respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, cardiac dysfunction, thromboembolic disease, hepatic and/or renal dysfunction, central nervous system disease, and exacerbation of underlying comorbidities in both adults and children.
WHO publishes the Living Guidance for Clinical Management of COVID-19 to provide an evidence-based guide for healthcare workers which is regularly updated to reflect new data and interventions. Recently, the management of acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure has been revised to include the new evidence for the use of non-invasive respiratory support for patients with critical COVID-19 for whom standard oxygen therapy is not meeting their needs.
This session brought together clinical experts from around the world to discuss clinical management of critical patients, and will covered recognition of ARDs, use of non-invasive ventilation, optimized supportive care, prevention of complications and patient centered care.
