Webinar under the Coalition of Action on Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems
Background
The Coalition of Action on Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems for Children and All (HDSFS) brings together Member States, UN Agencies, Civil Society Organizations,Academic Institutions, Social Movements and others to align, mobilize and support collective action toward the shared vision of healthy diets from sustainable food systems for all.
Actions to achieve this goal are wide-ranging and require working across food systems to influence food supply, food environments, and the value of food. Such actions hold great potential to advance progress towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals such as to end hunger and malnutrition in all its forms, reduce inequalities, and take urgent actions to combat climate change and its impacts.
Food-based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) translate the best available evidence as well as an analysis of the national context to detail what a healthy diet represents in a specific country or region. They provide healthy eating advice for the general public and can guide a range of policies and programmes. While FBDGs have traditionally considered some socio-cultural aspects, in recent years, countries have begun incorporating other sustainability considerations–particularly environmental sustainability, including to reflect the critical nexus between diets and climate.
This first webinar of the HDSFS Coalition’s Special Project on FBDGs seeks to facilitate peer-to-peer learning, respond to the requests of Member States, and catalyze discussion on food-based dietary guidelines’ contribution toward the vision of healthy diets from sustainable food systems, in particular, on the integration of climate considerations.
Objectives
- To provide an overview of how FBDGs can help inform the transformation of food systems for both health and climate outcomes;
- To share examples of actions countries are taking to develop or implement FBDGs that consider climate outcomes;
- To learn from Member States the experiences and challenges they encounter for the incorporation of climate considerations in FBDGs.
Outcome: This is the first webinar of the HDSFS Coalition’s Special Project on FBDG. The outcome of this workshop will include a summary of discussions as well as a repository of relevant resources and references.
