Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support (EQUIP) global scale up training

14 – 17 March 2023
Tunis, Tunisia

Background

The WHO/UNICEF Ensuring Quality in Psychological Support (EQUIP) project aims to improve the quality of mental health and psychosocial helping skills to support safe and effective service delivery. To do this, EQUIP makes evidence-informed competency assessment tools and e-learning courses available on a free-to-use digital platform. The resources can be used to support training and educational institutions, government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), both in development and humanitarian settings. A Helpdesk is available to support uptake and use.

Since its launch in March 2022, the EQUIP platform has registered over 10 000 new users with EQUIP being implemented in a number of countries around the world. To further support global implementation, WHO, with support from UNICEF and George Washington University, is hosting a four-day, in-person training.

The 40-person training is the first of its kind for EQUIP. It brings together representatives nominated by all WHO Regional Offices, UN agencies, international NGOs and key professional bodies to further the implementation of EQUIP globally and help ensure high quality support to people in need.

Objectives and outcomes of the training

Objectives:

  • Build capacity in EQUIP across WHO regions and key partner organizations
  • Encourage dissemination of EQUIP across WHO regions
  • Encourage integration of EQUIP into existing training and supervision practices of key partner organizations

The expected outcome of the training is an increase in regional and organizational capacity to support the implementation of EQUIP.

Scope of the training

The training will introduce participants to the EQUIP project, competency-based training and all EQUIP materials and tools. By the end of the training, participants will:

  • Understand what EQUIP is.
  • Understand why a competency-based approach to training is helpful.
  • Feel confident in using EQUIP tools.
  • Feel confident to adapt existing training and supervision approaches to use EQUIP to support the competent delivery of mental health and psychosocial support.
  • Be able to support the implementation and dissemination of EQUIP.
