United Nations Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment – side event : City, local and national governments join forces to accelerate transition towards healthy, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient food systems flyer

Organizers

City of Milan, Coalition of Action of Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems for Children and All (HDSFS), Food is Never Waste Coalition, Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments, Resilient Local Food Supply Chain Alliance and the Self Employed Women’s Association.

Background

The transition to sustainable food systems requires many changes. Integrated solutions are needed to respond to multiple challenges, including food insecurity and malnutrition, access to healthy diets, environmental degradation and multiple shocks and stresses. Urbanization is playing an important role in shaping food systems. Cities consume 70% of all food while contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, food waste and environmental degradation. Moreover, the urban poor frequently lack access to healthy diets causing an increase in malnutrition in all its forms including overweight and obesity. Urbanization and particularly the emergence and dynamism of medium and small cities and towns is increasingly linking rural hinterland to metropolitan areas. In this context, agriculture and food systems have the potential to bring employment and off-farm income.

Multisectoral policies and actions are needed at national and local levels to resolve sustainability trade-offs created by urbanization and the way food systems transform currently. New forms of multistakeholder food systems governance are needed.

Objectives

The objectives of the side event are:

  • To share success stories on how city, local and national governments can join forces to deliver interconnected solutions for healthy diets, food losses and waste reduction and resilience against shocks and stresses ;

  • To identify innovative multistakeholder food systems governance mechanisms.
