The 17th coordination meeting of the WHO REMPAN

The 17th coordination meeting of the WHO REMPAN - a global expert network on Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance -  was held held in Seoul, Republic of Korea from 13 to 15 September 2023.

The objectives for this year’s meeting were to gather the global expert community in the field of radiation emergency medicine and to provide a forum for exchange of knowledge, experiences and lessons learned from past accidents and emergencies. Over three days, the participants of the meeting discussed international cooperation, medical countermeasures development, and operational aspects of public health preparedness and response to radiological and nuclear emergencies. 

The objective of the meeting included:

  • to report on the relevant activities of participating institutions since the last meeting held in 2021, with a special focus on the management of human consequences of radiation emergencies;
  • to share information and coordinate relevant activities in the field of radiation emergency preparedness and the implementation of IHR (2005), including development of new technical guidance, manuals, check lists, as well as capacity building activities (trainings, exercises); and
  • to advocate for WHO’s role in strengthening public sector’s preparedness to radiation emergencies, to discuss and develop an outreach and  cooperation strategy with key stakeholders and donors in the radiation emergency field.

 

The meeting was kindly hosted by the WHO Collaborating Center – National Center of Radiation Emergency Medicine (NCREM) at the Korea Institute for Radiological Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) in Seoul.”
