Launch of the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention: Volume 19 Oral Cancer Prevention

29 November 2023 09:30 – 11:00 CET
Webinar

To promote release of the IARC Handbooks on Cancer Prevention: Volume 19 Oral Cancer Prevention, WHO is organizing, in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a launch event. This is the latest edition of the IARC handbook series and covers the topic of oral cancer prevention. The handbook provides a first-time evaluation of primary and secondary prevention interventions for oral cancer, including the benefit of quitting consumption of smoked tobacco, smokeless tobacco, areca nut and alcohol in reducing oral cancer incidence, and possibly mortality, the effectiveness of personal interventions to quit smokeless tobacco and/or areca nut use, and the effectiveness of oral cancer screening by clinical oral examination. This handbook will play a major role in encouraging the regulation of smokeless tobacco and areca nut use, a public health issue prevalent in the South-East Asian and Western Pacific regions.

Meeting objectives:

  • To launch Volume 19 of the IARC Handbooks for cancer prevention and by doing so, inform stakeholders on current evidence of public health and societal interventions to prevent oral cancer outlined in the handbook.
  • To raise awareness of oral cancer, its risk factors and how they can be minimized or prevented using evidence based strategies.
  • To promote dialogue between survivors, clinicians, academics and policy-makers.

Interpretation will be available in Arabic, French and English.
