Working for Health 2030 Programme Alumni Network Workshop: Public health for whom? Sharing perspectives on international public health systems

14 December 2023 11:00 – 13:00 UTC Time

NHS England and WHO are hosting a series of workshops for alumni of the WHO-NHS England Working for Health 2030 Programme, formerly the Year of the Health and Care Workers Programme. The series intended to promote thought leadership and collaboration between the alumni network and will offer insights into perceptions of public health at country level, as well as human resources for health management actions to address the challenges. Alumni inputs will contribute to the WHO and partner-led efforts to support countries to strengthen their public health workforce as part of the Public Health and Emergency Workforce Roadmap. The Roadmap aims to support countries to assess and strengthen policy and action on the workforce needed to deliver essential public health functions, including emergency response.

Workshops

The two virtual workshops for members of the alumni network, hosted on Zoom, will last 1.5 - 2 hours each.
In these workshops, alumni will be encouraged to share insights on:
  • the public health system in their country to provide context for the essential public health functions (EPHFs);

  • who the public health workforce are in their country and their scope of practice; and

  • the competencies the public health workforce need to carry out their work.
The first workshop on 30 November 2023 will set the scene and begin the discussion to gather the insights. The second workshop on Thursday 14th December 2023 will build on the outputs of the first workshop for refinement, corrections, and elaboration.

The workshops will provide an opportunity to facilitate collaborative approaches to addressing challenges in public health systems. They will be facilitated by a member of the NHS England team, and we will ensure all contributions are anonymised within reporting. We ask alumni members to plan to attend both workshops to allow a consistent discussion. Pre-workshop material will be sent in advance of the first workshop.

 [KC2]If this is complementing the Public Health and Emergency Workforce Roadmap, perhaps the talking points could be the three action areas: defining essential public health functions, strengthening competency based education, and mapping and measurement of occupations.
