Join us for a special UN General Assembly Side-Event: “Combating climate change and its devastating impact on the path to ending TB” on 23 September 2024. The event is being convened by the Ministry of Health of Brazil, and the World Health Organization, and is co-sponsored by the UN Alliance of Countries on the Fight Against Tuberculosis.
The high-level side event will build upon the successful outcomes of the 2023 UN High Level Meeting on TB and commitments made by world leaders, notably on tackling the key drivers of the TB epidemic including climate change. The event will bring together Ministers and other leaders, Heads of Agencies, partners and civil society, to discuss progress toward global targets including on closing gaps in access to care for people with TB recognizing the impact of climate change and on the interventions being undertaken for a climate-resilient TB response.
When: 23 September 2024 from 14:00H – 16:30H EDT
Venue: The Westin New York Grand Central, 212 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017
Background:
The event is being held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the UN Summit of the Future and the 2024 UN High Level Meeting on AMR. It builds on Brazil’s leadership and priorities as part of the G20 presidency which highlighted the importance of tackling TB and climate change at the 4th Meeting of the G20 Health Working Group.
Social, economic, and environmental factors like inequality, poverty, food insecurity, mass displacement, health system disruption, poor air ventilation, and air pollution intensify vulnerability to TB, heighten the clinical and financial impact on affected individuals, and drive the global spread of the disease. Tackling these social determinants is central to the WHO’s End TB strategy and was reaffirmed at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis in 2023. Climate change further exacerbates these challenges, directly and indirectly undermining progress in the fight against the global TB epidemic.
