Hybrid event: United Nations Headquarters, Conference Room 12; Live-streamed globally from New York, USA.

Event Details

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat, driven by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals, and plants. It affects all regions and income levels, with its impact worsened by poverty and inequality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Co-hosted by the governments of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the World Health Organization’s Health and Migration, this side event, held on the margins of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, builds on key milestones including the 2016 UN Political Declaration on AMR, consecutive ministerial meetings and the establishment of the Global Leaders Group (GLG). It also highlights key evidence and findings from the fourth Report of the WHO Global Evidence Review on Health and Migration, “Capturing the evidence on access to essential antibiotics in refugee and migrant populations.”

The event aims to mobilize international political commitment to combat AMR, with a particular emphasis on at-risk populations, including migrants and refugees. It advocates for equitable healthcare policies, explores the public health threat of AMR, and addresses challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries.

Key stakeholders, including Member States, UN agencies, non-state actors, and the private sector, will share evidence, best practices, and innovative solutions. The event will foster collaboration among governments, international organizations, and pharmaceutical companies, highlight actionable policy considerations, and promote tailored strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The discussions aim to establish or enhance public-private partnerships to address the risks and costs associated with antibiotic development and to catalyze concrete commitments from participants to ensure ongoing progress in addressing AMR challenges across all population groups, including refugees and migrants.

This event is co-sponsored by Brazil, France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Nigeria, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Slovakia, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, IOM, UNHCR.
