WHO in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust and the health community hosted the Health Pavilion at the COP29 UN Climate Conference, which took place in Baku, the Republic of Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. The Health Pavilion convened the global health community and key stakeholders across various sectors to ensure health and equity are placed at the centre of climate negotiations. It offered a rich 2-week programme of events showcasing evidence, initiatives and solutions to maximize the health benefits of tackling climate change across regions, sectors and communities.
The special day dedicated to the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH) at the Health Pavilion on November 19 convened global leaders, policymakers, and experts to advance climate-resilient, sustainable, and equitable health systems in the face of growing climate challenges. Through keynote addresses, action bursts spotlighting country successes, and fireside chats, the five sessions of the day explored solutions to strengthen health systems, decarbonize operations, mobilize financing, maximize health co-benefits, and embed gender and equity in climate-health actions. A resounding call to action emphasized cross-sector collaboration, innovation, and immediate implementation of evidence-based strategies to mitigate climate impacts on health and ensure global equity. A key step forward was welcoming two new Member States - the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kingdom of Tonga - to the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health.
