Bridging gaps: Integrated strategies to address tuberculosis and diabetes
WHO and International Diabetes Federation co-hosted hybrid event at the IDF World Diabetes Congress in Bangkok
When: 8 April 2025, 7:30H – 8:30H CEST
On 8 April 2025, WHO and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) will cohost a side event on tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes at the IDF World Diabetes Congress in Bangkok, Thailand. The event, Bridging gaps: Integrated strategies to address TB and diabetes, will provide an overview of the joint burden of TB and diabetes, along with the recently published WHO guidance on TB and diabetes. This event will also feature insights from a TB survivor living with diabetes, as well as from academics and implementers from countries with a high burden of TB and diabetes, exploring challenges and opportunities for scaling up collaborative efforts to tackle both diseases while advancing universal health coverage and global commitments. A panel discussion will bring together experts to explore the path forward.
Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, accounting for an estimated 1.25 million deaths among the 10.8 million who fell ill with TB in 2023. New data published by WHO and featured in the Lancet in 2024 estimate that 828 million people aged 18 years or older as having diabetes, representing an increase of 630 million since 1990. Some of the largest increases have been seen in low and middle-income countries with a high burden of TB where access to diabetes management is suboptimal. Diabetes is one of the most important drivers of tuberculosis worldwide with around 15% of people with TB having diabetes globally. Diabetes increases the risk of poorer TB treatment outcomes, and people with TB and diabetes are at higher risk of mortality. The latest guidance from WHO on TB and diabetes aims to support countries and key stakeholders in providing people-centred care for people with TB and diabetes which is integrated within primary health care.
