Blood donor story: Cabo Verde

World Blood Donor Day 2021

7 June 2021

Rony Fortes Brito

I am Rony Fortes Brito, 33 years old, journalist, born in São Vicente - Cabo Verde. I've always wanted to donate blood. One fine day, 12 years ago, my friends invited me to donate blood, and since that day I’ve never stopped. I feel I have a duty to save lives; people need my blood because I'm from the negative O-group.I learned that many donors stopped donating blood because of COVID-19, and consequently there was a lack of blood in the blood banks. This made me sad.

Even with COVID-19, the procedure for continuous blood donation is simple, fast and totally safe.

I take this opportunity to appeal to people, especially young people, not to stop donating blood, for many need this precious good.

Blood donation is one of the most beautiful languages of love.

Edith Cardoso

Hello, I'm Edith Cardoso. I'm from Cabo Verde, I'm 37 years old and I gave blood for the first time when I was 20, at the request of a classmate who had a family member in hospital

So I became a voluntary donor and still am to this day. It's a feeling of satisfaction to know that my blood helps other people’s hearts to beat.

Being a blood donor is a path I have chosen, and with the strength of my heart I will help keep the heart of the world beating.

Patrícia Marçal Delgado

I am Patrícia Marçal Delgado, 33 years old, born in Santo Antão, Cabo Verde. I've always heard about blood donation and I was aware of the need to contribute. During my training in architecture, some colleagues invited me to donate blood and I accepted immediately. I’ve been a regular blood donor since 2011.

In 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when everything was unknown and frightening, I confess that I was scared to donate blood. However, when I arrived at the Blood Bank, I saw that it was not very different from the usual. Except for pre-screening, distancing, and the use of alcohol gel, the rest was the same as before. I went to donate blood mainly because I knew that the reserve had decreased due to the pandemic. There were fewer people donating, afraid of what was happening. I felt very calm.

More than ever, I make an effort to keep donating blood. I feel useful, alive and happy to know that someone has had their life saved through my gesture. It's exciting to donate blood and keep the heart of the world beating.
