The opening segment included a statement by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres as well as video clips highlighting survivors of humanitarian crises with the help of CERF. The event was presided over by the Emergency Humanitarian Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, who during his statement, stressed the importance of focusing on the most vulnerable, including persons with disabilities. He also highlighted anticipatory financing, as a way to prevent disasters before they happened. A number of UN Agency representatives were in attendance, including Mr. Stewart Simonson, the Assistant Director-General of the WHO Office at the UN, who presented a speech emphasizing that the pledges and investments for health systems are critical for achieving the sustainable development goals as well as the universal health coverage.” At the pledging segment, 38 Member State donors expressed their pledges for CERF for the upcoming year.
