The WHO Global TB Programme convened the first funders’ forum on TB research with the theme ‘research capacity building’, in Washington DC on April 7th 2016. The aim of the forum was to create a platform for funders to exchange information about their various processes, strategies and methods of supporting TB research in low- and middle- income countries.

The forum brought together TB funders and public partners as well as relevant NGOs, who shared information on their strategies for capacity building in TB research. They deliberated on challenges and solutions to develop a sustainable cadre of TB researchers and research administration in TB endemic countries. Funders agreed that WHO should develop and maintain a directory of funding sources for TB research, for use by researchers seeking grants on topics related to the ‘Research and Innovation’ Pillar of the End TB Strategy.

Overall, the forum offered a fresh perspective on the value of a funder information network to improve understanding of mission, strategy and mechanisms of each funder, in a manner that has value for the funders, researchers, and the community at large. Participants agreed that the forum will meet regularly to discuss opportunities and challenges in TB research and strengthen communications across the TB funder community.
