We are saddened to inform you of the passing of our former colleague and friend, Pierre Cattand, from Saint-Genis-Pouilly, who was responsible for WHO’s sleeping sickness program during the 1990s. He passed away on 13 July 2022.
Pierre carried out remarkable work in the control of human African trypanosomiasis at a time when the disease was showing a worrying resurgence. He reinforced the training of health personnel, developed the mapping of disease foci, and fought tirelessly to ensure the availability of treatment. After his retirement, he continued to work on control and surveillance of the disease through the ATA, the Association Against Trypanosomiasis in Africa, organizing the International Course on African Trypanosomiasis (ICAT), in collaboration with WHO.
Those who had the opportunity to know him and work with him will remember his invaluable contribution and his deep commitment to improving the situation of those suffering from the disease – as well as his amiability and his ability to share his in-depth knowledge about trypanosomiasis with all who were interested in the subject.
We cherish memories of good times spent with Pierre and are proud to have worked alongside him.

Nous sommes attristés de devoir vous informer du décès de notre ancien collègue et ami Pierre Cattand, de Saint-Genis-Pouilly, qui était responsable du programme de la maladie du sommeil à l’OMS au cours des années 1990. Il est décédé le 13 juillet 2022.
Pierre a accompli un travail remarquable dans le contrôle de la trypanosomiase humaine africaine au moment de la recrudescence inquiétante de la maladie. Entre autres, Il a renforcé la formation du personnel de santé, développé la cartographie des foyers de la maladie et lutté sans relâche pour assurer la disponibilité du traitement. Après sa retraite, il a poursuivi sa collaboration dans le contrôle et la surveillance de la maladie à travers l’ATA – l’Association contre la Trypanosomiase en Afrique – organisant en collaboration avec l’OMS le Cours international sur la trypanosomiase africaine (ICAT).
Nous qui avons eu l’occasion de le connaître et de travailler avec lui garderons dans nos mémoires son engagement infaillible et ses contributions inestimables à l’amélioration de la situation des personnes souffrant de la maladie, ainsi que son amabilité à partager ses connaissances approfondies sur la trypanosomiase avec tous ceux qui s’intéressaient au sujet.
Nous gardons des souvenirs de bons moments passés ensemble et sommes fiers d’avoir travaillé à son côté.
