At the opening of the World Health Summit in Berlin, The German ministry of health announced its contribution of 115 million EUR to WHO over the next four years.
These funds will allow WHO more predictable funding so that it can drive progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Health and Well-Being for all people through the WHO General Programme of Work.
The additional resources will be geared towards the shared priorities of WHO and Germany, including health emergencies, antimicrobial resistance, and health systems strengthening. These areas of work cover a broad range of activities for WHO -- from disease outbreaks to technical guidelines and standards that help guide countries.
A well-resourced WHO will achieve the goals of the Organization’s 5-year strategic plan, saving over 30 million lives, adding 100 million healthy years of life and stimulating economies up to 4%.
WHO and Germany work together towards global health security and ensuring impact in countries through a transformed WHO, with a focus on measurement and accountability.
These voluntary resources are in addition to Germany’s mandatory fees (assessed contributions). WHO is proud to partner with Germany, which was the 6th highest donor in the 2016-2017 biennium, contributing a total of over US $190.6 million.
