Welcoming the TB recommendations
The UK-led Commission for Africa has published its long-awaited report.
The paper calls for wealthy nations to double their aid to the continent by $US 50bn a year over 10 years. Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, said it represented "a moment of awakening for Africa" and it was now up to the people of Africa, along with those in the developed world, to make sure the conclusions were implemented.
Welcoming the TB recommendations highlighted in the report, WHO's Director of Stop TB, Dr Mario Raviglione, said: "The Commission has rightly recognized the importance of addressing TB/HIV by supporting the Two Diseases, One Patient strategy. But for this strategy to succeed, we must also strengthen TB control across Africa and at all levels through DOTS."
The report will be presented to world leaders attending the G8 summit in Scotland in July 2005.
