Cases of guinea-worm disease drop to historic low

Combined, Chad, Ethiopia, Mali and South Sudan have reported 20 cases between January – October 2015 compared with 115 cases for the corresponding period in 2014.

South Sudan

Status for the period January–October 2015

For the first time ever, South Sudan has reported zero cases for 7 consecutive months (from November 2014 to May 2015).

No new confirmed cases in October 2015. Four cases were reported in 2015 (1 case in June, 2 cases in July, and 1 case in August) compared with 70 cases reported from January to October 2014; this represents a 94% reduction in the number of cases reported between 2014 and 2015.

During January–October 2015, more than 7500 rumours and suspected cases were reported and investigated.

Ethiopia

Status for the period January–October 2015

As of October 2015, one new reported case from Akweramero Farm, Gog Woreda, Gambella Region in Ethiopia. A total of three cases were reported in Ethiopia, one case each from Gop Fishing Camp, Abobo Woreda, Gambella Region (in May) and Pugnido Refugee Camp Agnuak, Gog Woreda (in August). All the cases were detected within 24 hours and contained.

During January–October 2015, 6670 rumours were reported, of which 99% were investigated within 24 hours.

Mali

Status for the period January–October 2015

Two new cases emerged in October 2015. A total of 4 (four) cases was reported in 2015, from (1 case) Karabadaga village, Tominian district, Segou Region, Mali and (3 cases) Tanzikeratene village, Ansongo district, Gao region, Mali. All the cases were contained except the case in Karabadaga village.

During January–October 2015, 487 rumours were reported and more than 98% were investigated within 24 hours.

Chad

Status for the period January–October 2015

As of October 2015, a cumulative total of 9 cases were reported from nine villages in eight districts and five regions:

During January–October 2015, 1470 rumours were reported, of which more than 98% were investigated within 24 hours.
