In 2019 WHO worked with UNICEF and the National Guideline Development Group in Montenegro to develop national guidelines for the health sector response to child maltreatment that are aligned to WHO recommendations. Primary healthcare staff including patronage nurses, paediatricians, paediatric nurses, psychologists and social workers from primary health care institutions in Montenegro were trained in how to recognize child maltreatment, what should be done to help child victims of abuse and neglect, and how to support non-offending caregivers. Workshops were held in three regions of the country to cover all primary health care facilities. WHO continues to support Montenegro’s Ministry of Health in integrating the new guidelines into job descriptions, pre-service education, and continuing education.
