The ICD-11 end-to-end digital solution is coming to its completion. ICD-11 and several of its components are fully digital. The last bit to advance were the rules for selecting the single underlying cause of death for national and international reporting of the cause of death. As a first step, a core set of rules and related algorithms had been put in place and delivered reliable information already.
WHO hosted a mortality rules digitalisation workshop in Geneva on the 30th and 31st of August 2022. The workshop served to clarify and refine the rules further. The work addressed user feedback and questions from programmers. Epidemiologists and statisticians developed solutions. The discussions were accompanied by programmers that transformed the instructions into logical rules. The clarifications will also be added as written instructions to the Reference Guide of ICD-11.
The workshop successfully clarified a range of open questions. The outcomes will improve the WHO Digital Open Rule Integrated cause of death Selection.
