Report of the fifteenth WHOPES working group meeting: WHO/HQ, Geneva, 18- 22 June 2012

Review of Olyset plus, Interceptor LN, Malathion 440 EW, Vectobac GR

Overview

The fifteenth meeting of the WHOPES Working Group, an advisory group to the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES), was convened at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 18 to 22 June 2012.

The objective of the meeting was to review Olyset® Plus (Sumitomo Chemical, Japan) and Interceptor® (BASF, Germany) long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LN) for malaria prevention and control; malathion 440 emulsion oil-in-water (EW) (Cheminova, Denmark) for space spraying against mosquitoes; and VectoBac® granules (GR) (Valent BioSciences, USA) for mosquito larviciding. The meeting also addressed issues and challenges related to procedures, criteria and requirements for testing and evaluation of public health pesticides, and made appropriate recommendations.

The meeting was attended by 16 scientists (see Annex I: List of participants). Professor Dr Marc Coosemans was appointed as Chairman and Dr John Gimnig as Rapporteur. The meeting was convened in plenary and group sessions, in which the reports of the WHOPES supervised trials and relevant published literature and unpublished reports were reviewed and discussed (see Annex II: References). Recommendations on the use of the above- mentioned products were made.
