Overview
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is caused by the Ebola virus (EBOV) from the Zaire ebolavirus species. During 2014–2016, the largest EVD outbreak to date occurred in West Africa, resulting in over 10 000 deaths, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Since 2017, one or more independent EVD outbreaks have occurred each year; during 2021 alone, there were two outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (in Butembo health zone, North Kivu province on 7 February 2021 and in Beni health zone, North Kivu province on 8 October 2021) and another in Guinea, in addition to a suspected case in Côte d’Ivoire that was later ruled out.
