WHO global reference list of traditional, complementary and integrative medicine indicators for health systems performance

Overview

Traditional, complementary and integrative medicine (often called TCIM) is deeply embedded in health-care traditions across the world, serving as an essential pillar of health and well-being across all six WHO regions. From ancient healing practices to modern integrative approaches, traditional, complementary and integrative medicine continues to play a vital role in primary health care and significantly contributes to improving health outcomes and advancing universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognizing its significance, the World Health Organization (WHO) has worked with its Member States to strengthen and integrate traditional, complementary and integrative medicine into national health systems, ensuring that it is safe, of high-quality, accessible, evidence-based, and aligned with global health priorities.
