Regional Implementation Framework to defeat meningitis in South-East Asia by 2030
Overview
The “Regional Implementation Framework to defeat meningitis in South-East (SE) Asia by 2030 (SEA RIF-DM2030)” is a strategic initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for SE Asia. It aligns with the global roadmap to eliminate meningitis as a public health threat by 2030 and addresses the unique epidemiological and health system challenges in the Region.
Meningitis, particularly bacterial meningitis, remains a significant public health concern in the SE Asia Region, accounting for 27% of global cases and 19% of global deaths. The framework outlines a comprehensive approach to reduce the incidence, mortality and long-term disability associated with meningitis through five strategic pillars: prevention and outbreak control, diagnosis and treatment, disease surveillance, support and care for affected individuals, and advocacy and engagement.
Key goals include a 50% reduction in vaccine-preventable meningitis cases and a 70% reduction in related deaths by 2030. The framework emphasizes the importance of robust surveillance systems, equitable access to vaccines, improved diagnostic and treatment protocols, and community engagement. It also highlights the need for multisectoral collaboration, sustainable financing and integration with national health plans.
The SEA RIF-DM2030 provides a detailed roadmap with strategic objectives, key activities and measurable indicators to guide implementation across Member States. It calls for coordinated efforts from governments, civil society, health professionals and international partners to ensure effective execution and monitoring.
This framework represents a critical step toward safeguarding the health and well-being of populations in the SE Asia Region and achieving the global vision of defeating meningitis by 2030.
