Universal access to safe blood transfusion

Overview

To address the challenge of inadequate access to safe blood transfusion, the Blood Transfusion Safety team at WHO
headquarters organized a ‘Global Consultation on Universal Access to Safe Blood Transfusion’ on 9–11 June 2007 in Ottawa, Canada. This consultation was organized with the objectives to review the current challenges to global blood safety and availability and to analyse the strategies for ensuring universal access to safe blood transfusion. The strategies outlined in this document also provide a direction for the development of the WHO Global Strategic Plan for Universal Access to Safe Blood Transfusion 2008–2015
