GLASS guide on use of national data on antimicrobial use

Informing policies and strengthening stewardship efforts

Overview

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global threat that jeopardizes decades of progress in medicine and public health. Preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobials requires urgent action, starting with surveillance of antimicrobial use (AMU) and translating that knowledge into action. This guide reflects WHO’s commitment to strengthening AMU surveillance and using data to inform national policies for appropriate access and use of antimicrobials. In 2024, global leaders endorsed a target that at least 70% of national antibiotic use should come from Access group antibiotics. Achieving this goal requires robust surveillance systems and multidisciplinary collaboration to make data actionable and sustainable.
