Overview
Following WHO’s declaration of tuberculosis (TB) as a global emergency in 1993, the DOTS strategy was promoted for control of the disease. Progress in implementing the strategy has been assessed mainly in relation to the two targets set for 2005 for global TB control: to detect 70% of new cases with sputum smear-positive pulmonary TB and to cure 85% of those detected.
