RABNET – Strengthening international surveillance of human and animal rabies
Weekly epidemiological record
Overview
Because up-to-date information on the rabies situation is particularly valuable, especially for decision-making on the continuation/cessation of rabies postexposure treatment initiated in another country, WHO established in early 1998 a World Wide Web-powered data bank and feedback system, RABNET, to which national rabies reference laboratories have direct, online access. National rabies prevalence data can be processed at any time, as well as other information related to rabies control and prevention.
Access codes for information processing secure data reliability, and wider access can be provided with additional codes. Any user of Internet has access to all national data for a given period of time, while data from countries without Internet access are processed by WHO.
