Global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis: progress report, 2013

Weekly epidemiological record

Overview

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne disease, caused by infection with the nematode species Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi or B. timori filarial parasites. An estimated 120 million people are infected with the parasites which damage the lymphatic vessels, resulting in clinical disease manifested as hydrocoele, lymphoedema, and elephantiasis. LF is the second leading cause of disability worldwide with 40 million persons suffering from complications that limit occupational activities, educational and employment opportunities, and mobility. Additionally, those suffering and their families often experience stigma and discrimination.
