EPI-WIN digest 3 - Changing perspectives of mpox. What has been learned from the latest outbreak and what is the approach now for elimination and control?

Overview

The multi-country mpox outbreak emerged and spread around the world in May 2022, prompting the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in July 2022. The International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee (EC) for mpox lifted the PHEIC in May 2023. However, the 2022/23 mpox outbreak is still classified as a protracted WHO Level 2 emergency.

This EPI-WIN Digest gives an overview of what has been learnt about mpox and how mpox changed in the 2022/23 outbreak, changes in public and healthcare worker perceptions of mpox and current strategies for mpox control and elimination such as the draft WHO global mpox strategy.

For more information, please watch the two EPI-WIN webinars from 2023 on mpox: Global mpox strategy for elimination and control: open consultation (June 2023) and Changing perspectives of the mpox outbreak (Feb 2023).
