Overview
In May 2019, the World Health Assembly considered a report by the WHO Director-General on “The public health implications of the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol” and requested the Director-General, through WHA Decision 72(13), inter alia, to:
- broaden engagement with Member States, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, relevant international organizations and relevant stakeholders; and,
- provide information on current pathogen-sharing practices and arrangements, the implementation of access and benefit-sharing measures, as well as the potential public health outcomes and other implications.
As part of the Secretariat’s work implementing WHA decision 72(13), a survey requesting information in furtherance of the Assembly’s decision was made available in English, French and Spanish on the WHO website in December 2019. The survey was administered using an on-line platform. All relevant stakeholders were encouraged to provide their responses in order to obtain as broad a dataset as possible. The closing date for responses was 13 March 2020.
