This document, now in its fifth edition, presents global and regional estimates of the incidence of unsafe abortion and associated mortality in 2003. Globally, 20 million unsafe abortions are estimated to take place each year, 19 million of these in developing countries. Each year, 67 000 women die due to complications of unsafe abortion. Maternal mortality ratio due to complications of unsafe abortion is the highest in Eastern Africa (160 per 100 000 live births).
