Strengthening Injury Prevention and Trauma Care

 

Globally, 4.4 million lives were lost due to injury in 2019 and injuries constitute 8% of all deaths and it is 3 of the top 5 deaths in 5-29 years were injury related. Among the deaths, road injury, self-harm, interpersonal violence constitutes the maximum number of deaths.

The 72nd WHA highlighted the importance of Emergency Care systems for universal health coverage and ensuring timely care for the acutely ill and injured. The Guideline provide the framework for the members states and WHO to work on strengthening emergency trauma and care system. It urges the member states to create policies, conduct voluntary assessment, promote governance systems, ensure funding, include both pre-hospital and hospital system as part of the emergency systems, promote data management and evidence, improve health work force capacity and use of WHO tools to improve data and patient care quality.

Regional Priorities and Initiatives

  • Support the member states in strengthening the Trauma Care Systems
  • Establish Network of hospitals within region to learn and support Trauma Care Systems
  • Training of health workforce on trauma and injury and community first aid responders   
  • Strengthen ambulance and emergency technicians
