WAAW 2019 Country Activites
BANGLADESH
- Signature Campaign - will be held at all Government Medical College hospitals, different private medical college hospitals and at some Universities in Bangladesh.
- Policy Round Table - A round table will be arranged possibly in presence of Honorable Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh with relevant stakeholders of policy levels.
- Communicable Disease Control Seminar - Seminar held at all Government Medical Colleges, different private medical colleges and at some Universities in Bangladesh.
BHUTAN
Bhutan is conducting advocacy in all hospitals this week by displaying posters and messages. At the national level, advocacy is being done in the national broadcasting channel and in radio. Video and radio jingles are aired for the whole week. Awareness on rational use of antibiotics in human and animal health was conducted on 20 November at the National veterinary hospital.
Hospitals are also conducting continuous medical education.

INDIA
Kerala government‘s order (in Malayalam) from Director, Veterinary Health to all District heads of Animal Husbandry Dept, to conduct awareness programme is connection with WAAW 2019.
This is based on AMR/KARSAP review by Health Minister, Health Secretary and Scientific Advisor to CM on 14 November 19. The health minister and PS Health also agreed to arrange a budget for KARSAP.

MALDIVES
WORLD ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS WEEK 2019 (WAAW)

(18th – 24th November 2019)
The AIM of WAAW
Maldives Food and Drug Authority, WHO Maldives, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, ADK Hospital and committees of AMR Program, organized activities aimed to increase awareness on safe use and protecting the effectiveness of antibiotics commitment to combat AMR and increase awareness about the scale of the problem in order to stop and regulatory frameworks in Maldives. The agencies aim to raise awareness about the effects of AMR on humans, animals and the environment. They have been working according to the National Action plan with the Committees. Maldives have Started a Stewardship implementation training program conducted a training on communication Strategy plan for AMR and drafted a National Communication Strategy Plan with the request of MFDA, WHO conducted this training programs with the help of WHO consultants.

- Distribution of Awareness Posters (18th – 24th November 2019)
Throughout the week awareness posters developed by WHO was distributed among government hospitals and private hospitals. It was instructed to display the posters in waiting areas and places where the massagers will easily be conveyed to public.
- Conducted awareness session for MNU Students (10th October 2019)
Prior to the awareness week, AMR awareness session for MNU students was conducted. This awareness session was in collaboration with MNU, WHO and MFDA. Guest speakers of this important session was Dr Arvind Mathur, WHO Representative for the Republic of Maldives and Dr Shaah Abdulla Mahir, Minister for state for health. Speakers explained how the resistance is spreading and how it can be controlled. After the session speakers answered some of the questions from students.
- Awareness messages through Social Media (18th – 24th November 2019)
Awareness messages, WHO posters and other awareness materials where shared in Social media through Facebook, Twitter, Viber, Instagram and other social media platforms by MOH, MFDA, WHO and Mi Raaje (Official twitter account for awareness by MOH).
- Awareness messages through TV and Radio (18th – 24th November 2019)
Aim of this session was targeted the public who watch and listen to TV and Radio. Information was provided by Doctors from ADK, IGMH and MFDA Staffs participated in various sessions. Which included information about antibiotic resistance and what AMR is and how and why it’s been spreading throughout the world. They also highlighted the importance of completing the dose and when and how antibiotics should be used.
- Conducted awareness session at AA. Thoddo (21st November 2019)
AA. Thoddo is an island focus on farming and agriculture. Is the reason why MFDA and WHO targeted the farmers, Council members, Students, teachers and parents. In this session they gave information about the side effects of using antibiotics when growing crops and farming. Environmental issues which face due to antibiotics been misused. The importance of AMR was also highlighted in this session. This event was funded by WHO.
- Awareness session for Pharmacist working in STO pharmacies (24th November 2019)
This session was targeted as STO as it is the largest medicine distributing, importing and issuing state owned company in the country. And have located a state owned pharmacy in every island in Maldives. Information was provided by MFDA staffs and Doctor from IGMH. More than 15 pharmacist participated in this event. Pharmacists was given information on how antibiotics would not be sold over the counter and how it should not have been issued without a prescription with the full dose. This event was organized by STO.
- Awareness for public (throughout the week /18th – 24th November 2019)
MFDA staffs visited different government and public owned offices and provided AMR awareness massagers on proper use of antibiotic not to misuse and how to prevent from been misused. They also answered some question regarding AMR.

NEPAL
Activities Report on World Antibiotics Awareness Week 2019
Following the endorsement of Global Action Plan 2015 on 68th World Health Assembly, World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) is being celebrated every year in the month of November by the government, different health facilities, schools, communities, and different organizations. The WAAW aim to raise awareness on the antimicrobial resistance and encourages the best practices on antibiotics among general public, professionals of different relevant stakeholders, policy makers and to avoid further spread of antibiotic resistance. This year the World Antibiotic Awareness Week was celebrated globally on 18 – 24 November 2019. In Nepal, the World Antibiotic Awareness Week was celebrated with different activities by related sectors at federal and provincial level on one-health approach.
- Broadcasting of jingles: Jingles on Antibiotics Awareness in seven different languages was broadcasted during WAAW2019 week (18-24 November) on Nepal Radio and Nepal Television developed by Department of Drug Administration which was disseminated by National Health Education, Information and Communication Center (NHEICC).
- Brochure on AMR: Brochure on AMR and judicious use of antibiotics was developed, printed and disseminated by NHEICC to the general public, students, professionals (human, animal, food, and environment) and journalist.
- Printing and dissemination of IEC materials: NHEICC has printed and disseminated the posters developed by OIE, FAO and WHO.
- Press Release of PM and sectoral ministers: ress release of Informative message on Antibiotic Awareness by the Office of Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister with the signature of Rt. Honorable Prime Minister K.P. Oli and joint informative message on Antibiotic Awareness by sectoral ministers (Human, Food, and Environment) with their signatures for the first time.
- Op-ed of RD published in newspaper: Op-ed of Regional Director of WHO South East Asia published on 20th November in national newspaper, titled “The battle of win: Policy tool called Access, Watch, Reserve (Aware) can accelerate the fight against antimicrobial resistance”.
- World Antibiotics Awareness Week 2019 Sensitization workshop Sensitization workshop on AMR during WAAW 2019 was organized by National Health Education Information and Communication Center on 24 November in participation of different stakes from health, animal, food and environment including journalist.

- Candle light event:
he candle was lighted in the premises of Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in the pattern of “Fight AMR”. The candle light event was organized with the participation of general public, patient parties, medical students, and faculties to raise awareness on limiting treatment option for infectious disease owing to increased resistance of antibiotics which was once sensitive and encourage judicious use of antibiotics to save the miracle drug.
- Antibiotic awareness and WAAW cover in news and op-eds: The news was covered on antibiotic awareness and WAAW and op-ed of different professionals working against AMR was published in different national newspapers including online media and social media during WAAW week.

- Antibiotics Awareness Stall: Antibiotics awareness stall was installed in Maharajgunj Medical Campus (IoM), Institute of Medicine, TUTH premises for the public.
he stall provided awareness on consequences of antibiotic misuse and antibiotic resistance and appropriate use of antibiotics through informative posters and banners to the general population, student, patient parties and faculties of IoM.
- School health programme on AMRsensitization: School health programme was organized with intent to raise awareness on antibiotic resistance of secondary level student of four public and private schools in Kathmandu.
The programme instigated with brief assessment of students on knowledge, attitude and practice about AMR followed by the content delivery on the topics: use and misuse of antibiotics, consequences of antibiotic resistance and its threat to modern civilization, way of preventing antibiotic resistance with one-health approach.
- Press met with national & international journalist on rationale use of AMR
- Panel discussion through skype on AMR in Pakistani television program: Indus special.
- Guest Panelsit: Dr Satish Kumar Deo from Nepal, Vidya Krishnan from India, Dr Ghais Un Nabi Tayyab from Pakistan, and Dr Sonya Saleem from London.
- The title of the program was Antibiotic Resistance: Why are life-saving drugs so expensive?
- Panel discussion among One Health stakeholders: The panel discussion among One-Health stakeholders was recorded and broadcasted (twice) in public health program in Nepal Television and Radio Nepal.
THAILAND
WHO Thailand support to WAAW, we will join an event on Monday 18th November co-hosted by MoPH, Thai Health Foundation, WHO Thailand and the Drug System Monitoring & Development Center, Chulalongkorn University (concept note attached). I will provide some rearks on behalf of WR Thailand and we plan to have a poster display – Some of the WHO posters translated into Thai language.
On Tuesday 19th we will also join an event organized by FAO (pdf file attached - waaw-2019).
