Webinar Series: Clean air and energy for health

Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health through the life course being responsible for some 7 million deaths every year mainly from noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and lung cancer, but also from acute respiratory infections such as pneumonia which mainly affects children in low- and middle-income countries. Unsustainable consumption, industrial pollution and power generation, inefficient household energy, transport, waste burning, agriculture and poor land-use planning are all responsible for poor air quality and ultimately contribute to climate change. Beyond air pollution related deaths, some other staggering data show that globally still 2.4 billion people primarily rely on unclean energy for cooking and 1 billion people worldwide does not have access to health-care facilities with reliable electricity impeding progress towards healthier populations, universal health coverage and emergency preparedness.

The webinar series Clean Air and Energy for Health – from evidence to solutions will provide a 360° view on current state of science, tools, interventions and the implementation of policies and programmes for clean air and better health. This series will also showcase solutions that can help prevent or mitigate air pollution health, economic and environmental costs. Bringing together experts, leaders, policymakers, civil society champions, innovators from a multi-sectorial perspective, it will also serve as a platform for fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and ultimately shaping a healthier, more sustainable future for all. This series will contribute to inform future global discussions related to air pollution and health under the auspices of WHO.

The webinar series is open to all stakeholders such as decision- and policy makers, technical experts, health workers, academia, civil society, and many others.
