High 5s: standard operating procedures

The High 5s project aims to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) within to achieve measurable, significant and sustainable reductions in a number of challenging patient safety problems.

Experience with standardization in other industries has shown that it leads to improvements in safety. However, it has been slow to gain traction in health care settings. This project explores the feasibility and impact of standardizing certain health care processes to address common safety problems.

Three SOPs have been developed, implemented and evaluated.
