Noncommunicable diseases
We are responsible for leading, coordinating and monitoring global action to cover additional people with health services, medicines, vaccines, diagnostic and health technologies for the prevention, screening, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. We aim to advance health equity for persons with disabilities, we have a focus on sensory impairments and bring together the work on rehabilitation from across the departments and from the three levels of the organization.

This manual is a practical guide on the prevention, identification, and management of hearing loss and common ear diseases that lead to hearing loss. It is intended mainly for health workers and doctors who work at the primary care level and provide services to people either at health facilities or in communities. 

It is intended to be administered by a trainer/instructor familiar with ear and hearing problems, their assessment and management, and is accompanied by a trainer’s handbook. The manual comprises a series of stand-alone modules.

The Trainer’s handbook accompanies the Primary ear and hearing care training manual. This handbook is intended for use by those involved in training health workers or in coordinating programmes for delivering ear and hearing care.

The training manual is accompanied by community resources that can be printed and used for raising awareness in the community. Community resources are available in the 6 official UN languages.

Basic ear and hearing care resource

To train community level workers without formal training who are involved in provision of care and information to young children, older adults; people in noise workplaces, CBR (community-based rehabilitation) workers; parents, teachers and other members of the community that wish to know about ear and hearing care refer to the Basic ear and hearing care resource.
