Country case studies on primary health care: Jamaica: development of workforce for first level of care

Overview

This report provides an overview of the Jamaican healthcare system, rooted in Primary Health Care (PHC) principles, and its commitment to community health, notably through its extensive network of health centers and trained health workers. However, challenges such as resource allocation, coordination with higher levels of care, and declining utilization rates pose significant barriers to effective PHC delivery. This report evaluates the strengths and challenges of Jamaica's PHC system, suggesting interventions to address gaps and capitalize on opportunities. Key strengths include territorial coverage and capacity for workforce development, while challenges include inadequate resources and declining utilization rates. Moving forward, initiatives to strengthen health centers, enhance intersectoral collaboration, and leverage technology represent promising avenues for improving PHC delivery in Jamaica.
