With over half the global population living in urban settings, cities play a critical role in developing, implementing and enforcing policies to create healthy environments.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and injuries such as road traffic deaths kill over 47 million people globally each year. The Partnership for Healthy Cities, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with the World Health Organization and global health organization Vital Strategies, is a global network of 74 cities whose leaders have committed to prevent NCDs—including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and chronic lung disease—and injuries through proven interventions.

As part of their work with the Partnership, each city selects one of 15 evidence-based interventions to prevent NCDs and injuries, based on WHO guidance. They benefit from technical expertise from network partners, and peer-to-peer learning from other member cities. The network also runs a Policy Accelerator which supports cities to draft and introduce policies to prevent NCDs and injuries.
