Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) 2020-2025

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) aims to reduce road crash fatalities and injuries in low and middle-income countries and cities by implementing a comprehensive set of actions that are proven to save lives.

In 2020, the BIGRS commenced its third phase, which will run to 2025. Priority countries in the current phase include Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Tanzania, Uganda and Viet Nam.

Priority cities of the new BIGRS phase include Accra, Addis Ababa, Bengaluru, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Guadalajara, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kampala, Kumasi, Mumbai, New Delhi, Sao Paulo, Salvador, and Recife.

To support the BIGRS programme, WHO provides technical support to assess and revise current legislation, works to build the capacities of select lawyers on advocating for evidence-based laws and regulations, engages with journalists with a view to their writing more in-depth road safety stories focused on change and solutions, and develops normative guidance documents.
