Monitoring the implementation of the WHO strategic and operational priorities to address drug-resistant bacterial infections (2025-2035)

The WHO strategic and operational priorities to address drug-resistant bacterial infections in the human health sector, 2025–2035 were recognized at the 77th session of the World Health Assembly. To track their implementation and based on the feedback received at a public consultation, a monitoring framework was developed with indicators across the following domains:

1. Impact: Control and reverse the urgent public health crisis due to drug-resistant infections in humans.

2. Outcome: Slow the emergence and spread of drug-resistant bacterial infections and preserve antibiotics for future generations.

3. Strategic priorities:

(i) Prevention of infections;

(ii) Universal access to affordable, quality diagnosis and appropriate treatment of infections;

(iii) Strategic information, science and innovation;

(iv) Governance and financing.

4. Operational priorities:

(i) Implementation of the WHO core package of interventions to support national action plans on AMR (human health sector) based on the WHO people-centred approach to addressing AMR in human health;

(ii) Additional country and global actions on governance and financing;

(iii) Enabling actions to support Member States (based on data reported to, or received at WHO HQ).

A detailed list of indicators can be found at the following link.

Many of the indicators rely on data officially reported to the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) and the annual Tracking AMR Country Self-assessment Survey.
