Climate change and health training programme
Climate Change and Health Training Programme
Climate change has far-reaching consequences for human health, health systems, and the social and environmental determinants of health. In response, WHO supports the advancement of climate-resilient and sustainable health systems through three key areas of action: addressing the health impacts of climate change; strengthening the resilience and decarbonisation of health systems and facilities; and advancing the health co-benefits of climate action across sectors.
This training programme is primarily aimed at training facilitators with a set of materials and guidance to conduct a face-to-face (or live virtual) training. The training content provides a comprehensive introduction to the interlinkages between climate change and health and WHO tools, frameworks, and approaches. Participants will develop the knowledge and technical skills needed to: assess climate-related health risks and vulnerabilities; estimate greenhouse gas emissions in the health sector; develop policy plans to respond to the health impacts of climate change; understand the role of health within global climate processes; identify evidence-based adaptation and mitigation strategies; and build the climate literacy needed to collaborate and co-design health decision-support tools with partners from meteorological services.
The training package includes:
- Presentation slides for each module with presenter notes*
- Participant training manual with module summaries, templates for reflection and learning activities and further resources; and
- Facilitators guide to support organisation of a training programme and use of the materials and tools for a comprehensive and interactive training session.
The training programme is structured around four modules:
- Introduction to Climate Change and Health
- Climate Change and Health Assessments
- Climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments
- Climate Change and Health Planning
- Health National Adaptation Plans
- Healthy Nationally Determined Contributions
- WHO Operational Framework for building climate resilient and low carbon health systems
- Enhanced health decision-making using climate information
This training is intended for:
- Academic institutions and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of the interlinkages between climate change and health
- Health workers and health facility managers at national, sub-national, and local levels
- Representatives of national Ministries of Health
- Professionals working in health-determining sectors, including environment, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), disaster risk reduction, food and agriculture, and meteorological services
- WHO staff working on climate change and health, environmental health, or related areas
