Over 250 participants from over 20 different countries gathered from 11-14 November 2013 in Da Nang, Viet Nam for two major conferences: the 5th multi-country workshop (11 November) on Field Epidemiology Training Programmes (FETP) in the Asia-Pacific Region and the 7th TEPHINET Biregional Scientific Conference on Advancing Public Health for Country Development (12-13-14 November).
The one day multi-country FETP workshop provided participants with an opportunity to discuss experiences, challenges and opportunities of the different FETP programmes run within the Asia-Pacific region. At the TEPHINET Biregional Conference FETP fellows showcased their findings from their work in the field. Trending topics during the conference included antibiotic resistance, nosocomial infections and a live video conference with international experts on MERS Coronavirus and the outbreak of Avian Influenza A/H7N9 in China.
The Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other international partners. It provides public health workers with the skills necessary to rapidly identify, investigate and respond to disease outbreaks. The program, which exists in over 50 countries around the world, was established by Vietnam’s Ministry of Health in 2008 in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
